Dr. Andrew Schafer
Dr. Andrew Schafer (Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY) is the Director of the Richard T. Silver, M.D. Center for Myeloproliferative Neoplasms at Weill Cornell. Dr. Schafer is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist. He and the other members of the Silver MPN Center (named in honor of CR&T’s founder) are engaged in pioneering research activities aimed at treating and curing MPNs, which include chronic myeloid leukemia, polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis.
A distinguished authority on thrombosis, coagulation, platelet and bleeding disorders, Dr. Schafer has made groundbreaking original research contributions in the areas of hemostasis, thrombosis, platelet function and vascular cell biology. He is a pioneer in medical education, mentorship and research who has held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Hematology and Association of Professors of Medicine.
Additionally, Dr. Schafer has served on the editorial boards of major medical and scientific journals, books and textbooks; founded The Hematologist, a journal of the American Society of Hematology; and authored more than 200 scientific articles.
